Monthly Notices from July's SGM

These are some brief notes from our Special General and Monthly Meeting held on Monday 13th July 2026.

Chairman's Announcements:

Pauline opened the meeting by welcoming all the members to this month's meeting and gave us all the usual safety announcements and reminded the members of the meeting place in the event of an emergency.

Pauline informed the members that 'Table of the Month' is the Geology group so have a look and a chat with the team during the Coffee break.

Pauline also mentioned that she is looking for new members for her Visits Team and RUG. If you want to know more then contact Pauline.

SGM

Gaynor then moved us into the Special General Meeting section where the members were asked to vote again for the AGM items because we didn't have enough members at the May meeting to meet the Quorum requirement of our Constitution. So with 180 members in the hall and 124 members having past their proxy votes to the Secretary, we had more than enough members comply with the constitution and vote again on the AGM items of which all items were approved.

Monthly Meeting

Adele reminded the members that she would lead today's walk to the post meeting coffee and chat.

Interest Group News

Roger gave us an update on the interest Groups:

Firstly, we have two new groups that have now started.

  • The Art of Pattern Making meets on the first Friday of the month at 2pm
  • Ukulele Beginners meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday at 2pm

We have two new groups starting in September:

  • Creative Writing 2
  • Spanish for Beginners

We have a new proposed group which is learning the British Sign Language

We also have some updates on other proposed groups:

  • Coin Collecting has a small but enough interest and a leader to start the group
  • The proposed group 'Singers for those that cannot sing' will now include strummers (Guitar, Ukulele etc) and will be called 'Singers and Strummers'. There is a leader for this group.

We still have some groups that would welcome more members; Badminton, German Intermediate, Singers, Art of Pattern Making & Ukulele Beginners.

Anniversary Quiz

Finally, Gaynor updated members on the 25th Anniversary Quiz that she ran over the last 6 months by posting questions in Buzz. All the correct entries were put in a bag and a winner drawn out which was Gillian Verrall.

After the Coffee break, Alan introduced our speaker who was Judy Karbritz and she told us about "The Curse of The Kennedy's". However, we weren't given permission to record the talk this month.

Pauline closed the meeting at 12:10pm
